Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima)
The Chinese Chestnut is grown as an ornamental tree and for nut production in areas where the American chestnut previously existed. The nuts are similar to American chestnut and can be used in cooking in the same way as the native nut.
Blight wiped out American Chestnut in early 20th Century
Beginning new New York City, the blight, introduced from Europe moved west killing the native nut tree.
